Before you upload, here is what the issuing authority checks. Most rejections come down to one of these being missed.
Size and framing
- The photo is 35 × 45 mm.
- Your head, from chin to crown, is 33–36 mm.
- Your face is centred, with the top of your shoulders in the shot.
Background and lighting
- A plain Light grey background, with no pattern, objects or other people.
- Even light on your face, with no shadows on it or behind you.
- No glare, reflections or red eyes.
Expression and pose
- Look straight at the camera with a neutral expression and your mouth closed.
- Eyes open and clearly visible, with hair away from your face.
- A recent photo that shows you as you look now.
Glasses and head coverings
- Glasses only where the rules for this document allow them, with no glare or tinted lenses.
- Head coverings only for religious or medical reasons, with your whole face visible.

How to take your photo at home.
Most rejected photos fail on light, pose or glare rather than the background, which we fix for you. Get these right and the rest is done.
- 1Face a window in daylight so your face is evenly lit, with no shadows under your eyes or chin.
- 2Have someone take it from about 1.5 metres away at eye level, or prop your phone up and use the timer. Close-up selfies distort your face.
- 3Look straight at the camera with a plain expression and your mouth closed.
- 4Keep hair away from your eyes. If you wear glasses, make sure there's no glare and they don't cover your eyes.
- 5Don't worry about the wall behind you. We replace the background and show you the finished photo before you pay.
